Neath Port Talbot Council Seeks Views on Active Travel Improvements

Neath Port Talbot Council is inviting residents to give their views on proposals to enhance walking, wheeling, and cycling routes across towns and villages in the county borough.

Through the enhancement of existing infrastructure and the development of new routes, the council aims to make Active Travel the preferred mode of transport for local journeys.

This initiative supports improved air quality, healthier lifestyles, and the overall attractiveness of communities as places to live and work.

The Active Travel Network Map outlines the routes the council intends to prioritise for future improvements. It is designed to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more accessible for all, particularly for those who do not currently travel actively and those who use mobility aids.

There will be multiple opportunities for members of the public to engage with the consultation process.

Consultation Timeline:

  • Consultation 1: 3rd September – 19th October 2025: Residents will be asked to share their views on existing walking, wheeling, and cycling routes in their local areas. Feedback may include identifying barriers such as difficult junctions, narrow pavements, or highlighting successful new infrastructure.
  • Consultation 2: Summer 2026: This stage will involve presenting the findings from Consultation 1 and seeking public feedback on the proposed plans developed in response to the initial consultation.

To ensure the network reflects the needs of the entire community, the council is particularly keen to hear from individuals who do not currently walk or cycle regularly.

Cllr Wyndham Griffiths, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, Transport and Connectivity, said:

“This consultation exercise presents an important opportunity for Neath Port Talbot residents to provide their views on both existing and potential active travel routes and to tell us exactly what they would like to see included on our future Active Travel Network Map.”
