Anglesey Council is to seek views on the future of post-16 education.
The challenges faced by the Island include a changing demographic with fewer school aged children and learners travelling between secondary schools for lessons in certain subjects because of smaller class sizes.
A desire to ensure the best possible education provision for young people has led the council’s Learning Service to assess its future post-16 provision.
Key stakeholders will be asked to take part in a four-week engagement process, which began on 20th January . The views of learners, parents / guardians, staff, governors, elected members and public will all be sought on the ‘Engagement: Provision of Post-16 Education’ document.
Its aim is to provide fair opportunities for all learners and strengthen their experiences, in line with Anglesey’s Modernising Learning Communities and Developing the Welsh Language Strategy.
Initial options under consideration are:
OPTION 1 – No Change: Keep the current provision exactly as it is.
OPTION 2 – Further develop closer working relationships between the existing providers.
OPTION 3 – Reduce the number of schools providing post-16 education.
OPTION 4 – Provide all post 16 education by one provider.
Anglesey’s Director of Education, Skills and Young People, Marc B. Hughes, said:
“Ensuring an effective education provision for today and for future generations is one of the County Council’s six key objectives (Council Plan 2023-2028).
“Our goal is to overcome the challenges we currently face and continue to ensure fairer opportunities for all of Anglesey’s children and young people. This will allow them to achieve their full potential and enjoy the best possible experiences during their school years.”
The engagement process will include an online survey and face to face engagement sessions at the Island’s five secondary schools and Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s Llangefni campus. These sessions will raise awareness of the ongoing review and give stakeholders an opportunity to ask any questions.
Views can also be emailed via ysgolionmon@ynysmon.llyw.cymru before the engagement process ends on Friday, February 21st 2025.
Education portfolio holder, Councillor Dafydd Roberts, said:
“This engagement process is a key piece of work as we continue to modernise education provision across both primary and secondary sectors. I would encourage all interested stakeholders and partners to make their views known to us.
“Your views on the four proposed options will be important as we consider the future direction of post-16 education provision on Anglesey. Please make sure you have your say as we try to deliver the best possible future education provision for our children and young people.”
