Supporting Students into the Right Career

A top Welsh comprehensive school has shared the importance of helping young people find the right career path for them. With so many options available to school leavers, making a decision can feel overwhelming.

Y Pant Comprehensive School based in Pontyclun believe each student needs bespoke support. While some may choose an apprenticeship, others will go straight into work. Many will choose university and so will need to study A-Levels or vocational courses at sixth form.

Bev Cheetham, Headteacher at Y Pant Comprehensive said,

“Everyone learns differently and will reach their chosen career through a different pathway.  We’re an inclusive school, focussed on producing well-adjusted students. Each young person as a destination and it’s important to focus on this to take the right steps and guide them.”

Y Pant has a history of success. As one of the top performing schools in the country, it’s recognised as excellent by Estyn and was placed within the top five percent of nationally best performing schools by Alps in 2022.

Lucy Bunce, Assistant Headteacher at Y Pant Comprehensive said,

“Our small class sizes mean teachers know each young person. We have an extremely high pupil attendance rate due to the support we offer. Students are made aware of all options available to them, through dedicated form groups aligned to the students’ preferred career path.”

The school offers regular careers fairs and has a dedicated careers officer. Students are also supported by a teacher with experience in their chosen career. Students with Additional Learning Needs can access bespoke support, a dedicated wellbeing officer, learning coach and counselling.

Students have access to a dedicated sixth form area, coffee shop, study area and IT facilities. They can take part in the sixth form committee, take leadership roles in the school parliament, fundraising events and organise their year 13 prom.

Y Pant has thriving sports teams, from rugby and football to drama and music. The school prides itself on offering leadership opportunities and life skills through its enrichment programme. It includes regular speakers from the legal profession, student finance and local banks who give budgeting advice.

The school has a wide range of vocational and A-Level courses on offer, from Business, PE and languages to Drama, maths and food. It’s sixth form courses are taught by experienced teachers who hold a degree or specialist knowledge in that area.

Applications are now open to study at the sixth form at Y Pant Comprehensive. The deadline to apply is Friday 1 March. To apply, visit: www.ypant.co.uk
