New training facilities in Newport’s Indoor Market are set to improve employment prospects of adults seeking support across the city.
South Wales based Whitehead-Ross Education will be offering a selection of adult numeracy courses to people across Newport, including through the Multiply programme, which is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The office, which was officially opened by Newport East MS John Griffiths and the Mayor of Newport, Councillor Trevor Watkins. The courses will range from numeracy in construction to practical maths for parenting. Courses will be run both out of the modern training facility in the market or in the local community.
Deborah Loganathan, a volunteer parenting ambassador, who recently completed the practical maths for parenting course said:
“I first encountered Whitehead-Ross and the Multiply scheme when I attended an event with my children during the Easter holidays. I was so impressed with the activities they put on because they made maths so much fun and interactive for the children. My seven-year-old daughter loved it.
“Following this event, I completed the Practical Maths for Parenting course and since then have been able to help my daughter so much more with her maths. It offered me so many ideas for easy-to-use everyday activities to help my daughter by making maths fun. I really would recommend it for all parents.”
CEO of Whitehead-Ross Education, Ian Ross, said:
“Employability services go far beyond securing employment. Education, skills, and training play a crucial role in tackling poverty, improving living standards, spreading opportunities, and improving employment prospects.
“Our new training centre will offer individuals across Newport the chance to access free numeracy training, as well as support and advice on employment opportunities from our experienced staff.

“Supporting people in our communities to upskill and move into employment is something very close to my heart, and I know how important this is to individuals as well as our local economy.
“There is a huge need for these kinds of services locally, so it is fantastic to see Newport City Council working with organisations like Whitehead-Ross Education to support local residents.”
Whitehead Ross is an education and social welfare organisation that operates 14 training centres across the UK with six located in South Wales. Its work includes support for unemployed individuals to secure and retain jobs through employability programmes like Jobs Growth Wales Plus, adult education and social service provision. Last year the organisation supported more than 3,500 people to secure employment or training.
