“Don’t rely on someone else to ask you – you have to be brave and do the things that will make you stand out from the rest.”
Those are the words of wisdom shared by Jamie Edwards, Head of Community at Wrexham AFC Foundation to Football Coaching & the Performance Specialist degree students at Wrexham University, during the institution’s Gamechangers: The Future of Football and Community Development conference.
Jamie, who has worked at the club since last year, was one of the speakers at the event, which focused on the power of football and each speaker’s route into the sport.
He provided students with a fascinating insight into what it’s like to work at the club.
He said:
“Working for Wrexham AFC is like jumping on an aeroplane, taking off – all while building it mid-air, you just never know what’s around the corner next – and I love it. It’s all about grabbing those opportunities as and when they arise.
“Don’t wait around and don’t wait to be asked, volunteer, go out there, and try and experience things for yourself. Don’t rely on someone else to ask you – you have to be brave and do the things that will make you stand out from the rest. But ultimately, enjoy what you’re doing and what’s in front of you.”
Through Wrexham AFC Foundation’s work, the team aims to change the lives of children and young people across Wrexham, North Wales and beyond for the better.
Speaking about the Foundation’s purpose, Jamie said:
“I love making a difference – and being able to do that in this role is hugely rewarding. Through the power of football and the club, we want to improve the lives of children and young people through improving their health, support their learning and provide them with opportunities.
“This year, we have also been able to partner with the Kick4Life FC from Lesotho – so as well as making a difference to our community, we also have a chance to make positive change globally. For us, it’s about remaining rooted locally, while making an impact globally.”
Other speakers during the day, included Kelly Davies from Ashoka Sport for Changemaking, Allan James from Cymru Football Foundation, Katie Rowson from Aberdeen Football Club, and Dan Dodge from Sport4Change.
Sara Hilton, Senior Lecturer in Football and Coaching Science, added:
“Our students had an unforgettable day at our Gamechangers conference – and the feedback we’ve received from them following it has been fantastic.
“We were proud to welcome a powerhouse line-up of speakers who inspired, challenged, and energised our students, who were treated to thought-provoking discussions and invaluable insights into how football is being used as a force for positive change in communities around the world.
“A huge thank you to our fantastic speakers, who each brought something special to inspire our next generation of football changemakers.”
