Powys County Council is encouraging residents, businesses, community organisations and other stakeholders to share their views on how the authority tackles long-term empty homes.
Currently, a 100% Council Tax premium is charged on properties that have been empty and unfurnished for more than one year.
Welsh Government regulations allow local authorities to charge a maximum Council Tax premium on long-term empty properties of up to 300%, and the council is seeking views on whether to introduce a stepped approach that increases over time or to keep the current system.
There are currently 897 long-term empty properties in Powys subject to the premium, representing around 1.3% of all homes in the county.
The council is keen to hear from residents and stakeholders about:
- The impact of empty properties on local communities
- Whether reducing long-term empty properties should be a priority
- Views on potential changes to the premium, including stepped increases
The premium aims to encourage owners to bring empty homes back into use, helping to increase the supply of affordable housing and support sustainable communities.
Cllr David Thomas, Cabinet Member for Finance and Corporate Transformation, said:
“Long-term empty properties can have a real impact on our communities, from reducing housing availability to affecting the local environment. This consultation is an opportunity for people across Powys to share their views and help us shape a fair and effective approach going forward.
“We want to make sure any changes we consider support our communities, bring empty homes back into use, and make best use of housing across the county. I would encourage everyone to take a few minutes to have their say.”
