Wet Wipes Containing Plastic to Be Banned in Wales From 18 December

By National News · 30 Oct 2026 · 1 min read

Businesses across Wales are being urged to prepare for a new ban on wet wipes containing plastic, which will start on 18 December.

The change will make it an offence to supply or offer to supply these wipes to consumers in Wales, including where products are provided for free.

The Welsh Government aims to prevent the environmental damage caused when wipes containing plastic are disposed of incorrectly.

The ban applies to supplying in shops and online. Products include baby wipes, make-up removal wipes, moist toilet tissue, antibacterial hand wipes and household cleaning wipes.

The ban does not extend to reusable wet wipes or plastic-free alternatives. Wet wipes containing plastic designed or manufactured for medical care or treatment are exempt. The Welsh Government also makes clear that business-to-business supply is not affected.

From 18 December businesses should stop selling or providing free of charge banned single‑use plastic products in Wales. They should make sure staff are aware of the bans and comply with the law. Training should be provided to help them understand the effect of the law on their work.

Businesses should ensure they have removed banned products. Businesses with stock they will no longer be able to use should speak to their supplier, local authority or trade association about how to dispose of them correctly. Businesses are responsible for any disposal costs where products cannot legally be supplied, and that wipes should not be placed in recycling.
