Film Students Get a Taste of Hollywood Action at Workshop

Students at a Welsh university had the chance to film with the same state-of-the-art cinema cameras which are being used on major Hollywood productions.

The RED Digital Cinema camera company visited the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and Canolfan S4C Yr Egin in Carmarthen to provide a filmmaking workshop.

The event, supported by the Creative West Wales Network, provided students with hands-on experience using state-of-the-art 8K cinema cameras to capture captivating sequences featuring the performances of the Pembrokeshire Fire Spinners.

Under the guidance of industry experts, students from UWTSD’s BA Adventure Filmmaking and BA Digital Media Production courses had the opportunity to explore the full potential of cinematic storytelling by filming sequences of smoke bombs and flame throwers with performers in full circus costumes.

During the day, students were using the same cameras and lenses used on major Hollywood productions, such as the latest Marvel movies and Disney+ series.

Brady Stone, Territory Sales Manager for UK, and Northern Europe for RED Europe, said:

“It was a real pleasure putting on a RED day at UWTSD. We took the full arsenal of RED cameras and the team at the university organised some fantastic subjects to shoot. The students were fully engaged throughout the day and really enjoyed getting their hands on the kit. They were able to see the benefits of shooting RAW, high resolution and high frame rates, and they could use the cameras’ wide dynamic range and extended highlights mode to capture some great footage both in the low-lit studio and the bright exterior set.”

The workshop also showcased Tokina lenses, the same lenses which had just been used to film Tom Hiddleston’s performance in season 2 of Loki for Disney Plus.

Dr Brett Aggersberg, UWTSD’s Programme Manager of BA Adventure Filmmaking and BA Digital Media Production said:

“Providing industry focused opportunities such as work with high end cinema cameras is a very important part of delivering a contemporary professional degree course.

“These students will graduate with the skills and confidence to be employed in industry, or to be an entrepreneur and set up their own business. Companies such as RED and Tokina see the value in supporting new talent and are excited about the creative input of the next generation of filmmakers and content creators.”
