Sabic Chooses Ledwood to Help Deliver Teeside Improvement Project

SHARE

Global petrochemical giant SABIC has appointed Pembroke Dock-based Ledwood Engineering to help deliver its multi-million transformation of its UK operations in Wilton, Teesside.

The 12 month contract for Ledwood will see a team of 150 engineers working with SABIC to disinvest 4,000 metres of existing pipework and 26 pieces of equipment, before fabricating, installing and testing 5,500 metres of pipework and erecting 41 pieces of equipment and 155 tonnes of steelwork at the Olefins 6 site.

The works are part of the Teesside Improvement Project (T.I.P), the aim of which is to convert SABIC’s Teesside Olefins plant from a flexible but complex facility to a more simplified one, using only one feedstock. This will support the target of operations approaching carbon-neutrality by 2030.  SABIC says this first phase will reduce its carbon footprint by up to 60 percent, making it one of the world’s lowest carbon-emitting crackers.

Nick Revell is Managing Director of Ledwood. He said:

“This contract is a major vote of confidence in our capability, particularly as it comes hot on the heels of the announcement by GE that we have been appointed to work on Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant. Together, these two contracts will help to safeguard and create some 300 jobs.

“With expertise in the global chemical and processing industries, our work for SABIC in Teesside is being delivered by a local team led by Project Manager Steven Stokes. We’re really proud to be playing a part in enabling SABIC to make the transition to decarbonise its chemical cracker and the company’s global operations.”

Ledwood is an independent engineering, fabrication and construction company specialising in the delivery of complex projects across the oil, gas, process and energy industries.
