Ofgem Seeks AI Technology Specialist in Cardiff to Support Digital Transformation of UK Energy Regulation

By AI, Tech & Innovation · 26 Oct 2026 · 2 min read

The UK energy regulator Ofgem is recruiting a Senior Solution Architect specialising in artificial intelligence, with Cardiff among the available locations, as it expands its use of AI and data-driven technology to improve decision-making, strengthen services and support the transition to a more sustainable energy system.

The appointment forms part of Ofgem’s wider digital transformation programme, which is focused on developing modern data and artificial intelligence capabilities across the organisation.

The two-year position offers a salary of between £49,452 and £62,699, depending on location, and will involve helping to design and implement AI systems that meet demanding requirements for security, transparency, performance and responsible use.

Working within Ofgem’s Digital, Data and Security Services directorate, the successful candidate will lead the architectural design and assurance of AI and machine learning solutions across a range of programmes.

The role reflects the increasing importance of artificial intelligence within public sector organisations, particularly where complex data, regulatory responsibilities and major economic decisions require reliable and transparent technological systems.

Ofgem is seeking to ensure that emerging AI technologies can be integrated effectively into its existing digital infrastructure while maintaining strong governance and accountability.

The successful applicant will work alongside data scientists, engineers, technology specialists and business teams to translate organisational requirements into practical technical solutions.

Responsibilities will include developing AI architecture standards, evaluating emerging technologies, managing technical risks and ensuring that new systems can operate securely and efficiently alongside existing platforms.

A particular focus will be the responsible deployment of AI, including ensuring that automated systems are explainable, ethically governed and supported by appropriate data management arrangements.

The role will also involve advising senior decision-makers, supporting other architects and helping establish consistent approaches to AI development across the organisation.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate substantial experience in solution architecture, data architecture or AI engineering, together with an understanding of enterprise technology frameworks and the governance challenges associated with artificial intelligence.

Experience working with Microsoft Azure technologies, including Azure Machine Learning, Copilot Studio and AI Foundry, would be advantageous.

Applicants must also hold, or be willing to obtain within six months, a relevant professional certification in AI or solution architecture.

The availability of the position in Cardiff creates an opportunity for technology professionals based in Wales to contribute to the digital development of one of the UK’s principal economic regulators.

The appointment also demonstrates how artificial intelligence expertise is becoming increasingly relevant across sectors beyond traditional technology businesses, including energy, infrastructure and public administration.

Ofgem says its investment in digital capabilities will support innovation and better service delivery while maintaining the standards of security and public trust required of a national regulator.

The employment package includes a Civil Service pension with an employer contribution of 28.97%, flexible working arrangements, hybrid working and professional development opportunities.

The position is also available in Glasgow and London.

Applications for the Senior Solution Architect (AI) position close at 11:55pm on Tuesday 3 November 2026.

The vacancy reference is 485167.
