Three Neath Port Talbot building projects are in the running for the prestigious Wales RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Awards 2019.

The three projects are the ultra-modern £30m Ysgol Cwm Brombil in Margam, which is fitted with 78 miles of data cabling, the Neath Port Talbot College Sixth Form Academy Hub and Ty’r Orsaf, the apartment block with ground floor commercial space which has just been completed on the site of Port Talbot’s former Police Station.

They are among 23 of Wales’s most innovative and community beneficial property projects which have captured the hearts of RICS judges and will now go on to compete in eight categories at this year’s awards ceremony on May 1st this year.

The black tie awards evening will be held in the Exchange Building in Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff.

The RICS Awards showcase the most inspirational initiatives and developments in land, construction and infrastructure.

All category winners get the acclaimed Wales Project of the Year title, awarded to the scheme that demonstrates outstanding best practice and an exemplary commitment to adding value to its local area. Last year saw Swansea University led consortium SPECIFIC’s Active Classroom win the esteemed title.

The awards highlight the great talent involved in shaping the built environment in Wales for now and the future. This year’s shortlisted projects in Wales also include the BBC Cymru Wales Headquarters in Cardiff and the Menai Science Park, Anglesey.

Chair of the RICS Awards 2019 Wales judging panel, Geraint Evans, said:

“What’s great about the RICS Awards is that they celebrate and recognise the community impact that these shortlisted projects are having on their local communities, as well as the talent and collaboration of the teams behind them.”

Ty’r Orsaf (Station House) has been built on the site of the former town centre Port Talbot Police Station. It is a stylish three-storey collection of 30 apartments and three ground floor commercial units opposite Port Talbot’s integrated transport hub and main railway station.

Ysgol Cwm Brombil is a new 3-16 co-educational school serving the communities of Coed Hirwaun, East and Central Port Talbot and the Afan Valley

Neath Port Talbot College’s Sixth Form Academy Hub in Neath, the A/B block of Neath College on Dwr-y-Felin Road, which currently houses the maths and science departments, has been completely upgraded. The three-storey refurbishment project includes a new glazed extension and recladding of the existing building.

Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Sustainable Development, Cllr Annette Wingrave said:

“We wish the Neath Port Talbot projects and the teams behind them well in this year’s RICS awards and their shortlisting alone reflects the quality of the work involved and the beneficial impact they will have on the local community.”
