First 21 Homes Ready at Major Llandudno Town Centre Scheme

A new chapter is beginning for Llandudno, as ClwydAlyn confirms that 21 of its 77 new homes at Builder Street are ready to be handed over to local residents; marking the first significant addition of homes to the town centre in many years.

For the people who will soon move in, these homes represent much more than bricks and mortar. They will provide a safe, warm and affordable place to call home, creating solid foundations from which people can build their lives and look ahead with confidence.

These new homes, delivered by ClwydAlyn in partnership with Conwy County Borough Council, K&C Construction and Welsh Government, will provide much needed affordable homes, and for some residents an opportunity for a completely fresh start.

Living in a town centre location can mean being closer to work, education, shops, public transport, family, friends and community facilities. This development will provide 100% affordable homes for local people, in an area where there is an independently identified shortfall.

During the open morning local councillors, leaders from Conwy County Borough Council and Llandudno's Mayor visited, to look around the new homes, see the progress that has been made at the site and to meet with the ClwydAlyn development team.

One of the roads on the development, Clos Glyn Griffiths, has been named after a young sergeant pilot, and WWII hero, Glyn Griffiths from Llandudno. Aged just 24 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for his valiant service, flying Hawker Hurricanes in No.17 Squadron during the Battle of Britain in 1940. Councillor Angela O' Grady came up with the suggestion that the street should be named after him.

Cllr O'Grady said:

“It was heart-warming to see Sgt Glyn Griffiths being remembered on one of the road signs. I never thought it would come to fruition and to be able to walk past the sign almost every day, it is just lovely to know this young military man will be forever remembered in his hometown.”

Penny Storr, Head of Development and Growth at ClwydAlyn said:

“These new homes are so important for Llandudno. We are delighted that people will soon begin moving in.

“The new residents at Builder Street will have a place to call their own and put down roots in a community. This development is significant providing much needed affordable housing and provides an excellent opportunity for the town.

“Families will start to move into the houses this month, with expected completion for the apartments being in September. We wish all new residents at Builder Street the very best in their new homes!”

Cllr Stephen Price, Cabinet Member for Housing, Regulatory and Audit, said:

“I'm really pleased to see that these properties are ready to welcome new residents. I'm delighted that we've been able to work together to support the ambitions of Conwy's Housing and Homelessness Strategy by delivering high-quality, affordable homes in a convenient location close to town centre amenities. This development will create more opportunities for local people to access affordable housing and help meet identified housing need across Conwy County.”

There are 56 apartments at the site, 24 of which will go to people aged over 55, when completed.

These new homes will meet and exceed the current regulatory standards: Welsh Government Housing Quality Standard, Welsh Government Development Quality Requirements and Welsh Government Beautiful Homes and Spaces Standards.
