Cardiff-headquartered Shaw healthcare has been selected by Dorset Council to design, build and run a new nursing and dementia care home near Bridport, on the south coast of England, as part of a its ongoing investment in modernising social care services in the region.

The Bridport Care Community project is being led by BICL, a partnership of Morgan Ashley Care Developments and East Boro Housing Trust, incorporating a 69-bed residential care home, built alongside supported living accommodation, as well as dedicated accommodation for key health and social care staff.

The consortium will be working with Dorset Council to develop detailed plans ready for a formal planning application to be submitted next year, with completion planned for Spring 2021.

Geraint Evans, Commercial & Development Director at Shaw, said:

“We are delighted to have won the contract and look forward to seeing the Bridport development thrive. Shaw places significant emphasis on person-centred care which aligns with Dorset’s Council values and together we look forward to delivering the type of care that we would want for our own loved ones.”

Cllr Laura Miller, portfolio holder for adult social care and health at Dorset Council, said:

“This is a really exciting opportunity for Bridport. The current facilities in the town need modernising and don’t offer the right outcomes for the people living there.

“The new development will not only offer more choice of accommodation to people who need support, but it will also offer truly affordable housing for people working on the campus.”

Shaw healthcare recently signed an agreement to take on 12 local authority-owned care homes in Powys, following the conclusion of a contract between the council and Bupa. Next month, the firm will open two state-of-the-art care centres in Liverpool, each providing 60-bed spaces and facilities for people with dementia and other long-term residential and nursing care needs, including specialist therapy areas, modern dining facilities and sensory gardens.
