Wrexham’s New Biomechanics and Performance Sciences Lab Set to Enhance Sports Science and Drive Economic Growth

Wrexham University’s new Biomechanics and Performance Sciences Lab, a cutting-edge analysis centre, is expanding the sports science landscape across North Wales.

Building on the university’s established physiology lab, the centre aims to offer an advanced sports testing service to teams, athletes, and sports organisations from Wales and beyond.

This state-of-the-art facility is designed to study and enhance physical performance by analysing athletes’ movement and strength.

“Biomechanics in sports science is fundamentally about movement,” explained Dr Chelsea Batty, Principal Lead for Sport and Exercise Sciences and Applied Sciences at Wrexham University. “Our new lab allows us to test and analyse factors like gait, power, speed, and range of motion using specialised equipment that many teams don’t have regular access to.”

With the facility now open, Wrexham University has already begun attracting interest from professional teams, including the Widnes Vikings rugby league team. The lab provides sports professionals with a complete performance analysis package that combines biomechanics with physiological testing. The centre’s capabilities include an anti-gravity treadmill, an isokinetic dynamometer for measuring muscle strength, and sophisticated motion analysis technology.

“We’re able to look at both the physiology and the biomechanics of performance, which is invaluable for teams in their pre- and postseason testing,” said Dr Batty.

The university believes that the opening of the Biomechanics and Performance Sciences Lab will also provide a boost to the local economy. By drawing in teams and athletes from across the UK, the facility is set to bring spending to Wrexham as sports groups book overnight stays and visit local businesses.

“It’s a real opportunity to put Wrexham on the map, not just for football but for its expanding sports science facilities,” Dr Batty added. “With teams coming to use the lab, the economic impact extends beyond the university and into the local community.”

The centre’s focus on collaboration with industry also strengthens Wrexham University’s role as an anchor institution in the region. By offering sports science consultancy and tailored performance packages, the university is creating links that go beyond academia, promoting regional growth and making Wrexham a go-to destination for sports science support.

A key component of the new lab’s offering is its integration with student development. Through internships and practical placements, sports science students gain hands-on experience working with athletes.

“When the Widnes Vikings come in we’ll have 12 students assisting with the testing. It’s a fantastic opportunity for their professional growth and CV,” Dr Batty said.

The university’s commitment to enhancing student experience and employability aligns with its broader mission of community engagement and skill development.
