Biocatalysts was established in 1883 in Cardiff, putting Wales on the biotechnology map and growing into a global company with sales in over 30 countries worldwide and direct Sales support in Europe and North America. In 2018, Biocatalysts became part of the BRAIN Group, further broadening our capabilities.
As a global company, we think it’s important to be leaders in inclusivity in the workplace, we pride ourselves on opening our doors to everyone and empowering our individuals to develop and grow in their careers. 36% of our employees are women, with their roles ranging from support roles to technical roles and Directors.
We encourage internal promotion and giving our employees the opportunity to make changes to their careers. Many of the women here at Biocatalysts started in entry level roles in the laboratory and have progressed to roles such as Quality & Food Safety Co-ordinator and Assay & Analytical Specialist.
But what does ‘being a woman in science’ really mean to our employees?
One of our Assay & Analytical Specialists said
“Science is all around us and is a never-ending topic that will continuously develop and make us feel ambitious due to its unlimited potential that we are still learning. I have always enjoyed learning about science from such a young age. My first memory of science is taking water samples from the garden pond and looking under the microscope at the microbes and being curious of life beyond the human eye.”
Our Quality & Food Safety Co-ordinator began at Biocatalysts as a QC Laboratory Technician, she added “I have always felt inspired by knowing how the world works. As a young woman starting her career in science, it is empowering to be surrounded by so many strong, smart and successful women.”
Our Process Development Manager was recently promoted to Fermentation Project Delivery Manager, she said
“I chose to work the interface between science and business as it is an opportunity to do work that makes a real difference.”
Celebrating International Women and Girls in Science Day is just one way we can externally show our pride for the women in our company, recognising their skill, expertise, and dedication to the growth of our business. We’re keen to continue growing the number of women at Biocatalysts, giving a real recognition for women in the biotechnology sector.
