Welsh Tourism Boost After Surge in Outdoor Stays

As St David’s Day approaches on 1 March, Europe’s largest outdoor accommodation provider Pitchup.com has revealed a huge increase in camping and caravanning tourism to Wales last year.

In 2019, Wales’ caravanning and camping sites saw a 17% increase in bookings and a 22% increase in total sales revenue, in comparison to 2018. With just shy of £1 million bookings on Pitchup.com for Pembrokeshire alone, it is estimated that domestic camping and caravanning customers are now spending £431m* during the trips per year.

Celtic Camping, in Pembrokeshire, topped Wales’ 2019 bestseller list. With almost 955 bookings made in 2019, equating to a 128% increase on the previous year, the 250-acre National Trust Farm is one of Pitchup.com’s top-selling campsites not just in the UK but globally last year. Meanwhile, Anglesey was the fastest growing camping and caravanning destination in Wales – with bookings up by over 500% year on year.

Commenting on the increase, Dan Yates, founder of Pitchup.com, said: “2019 was an unsettled year, with uncertainty surrounding Brexit leading to decreased consumer spending. However, Brits were still looking for a quality holiday – just one closer to home and at a good price – so it comes as little surprise that one of the UK’s favourite outdoor holiday destinations, Wales, saw a real boost of interest in its camping and caravanning sites.

Yates continues:

“As for Celtic Camping, it really does have everything. Offering traditional tent, motorhome and caravan pitches situated in a spacious field filled with wildlife, it has stunning sea views and is only a five-minute walk from the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. These coastal trails run from Abereiddi to the village of Porthgain in one direction and to Whitesands Bay via St David’s Head in the other. This relaxed and friendly site welcomes all; dogs, families, individuals and couples and is one of the most scenic places around to eat alfresco with a campfire or barbecue.”

Celtic Camping owner Ian Griffiths commented;

“We are so thrilled to have been named as Pitchup.com’s best selling site in 2019. Pitchup.com has really helped us to raise our profile and the number of bookings it has generated has been beyond all expectations. We look forward to continued growth and welcoming new visitors through 2020 and beyond.”

Celtic Camping offers family and dog-friendly tent, motorhome or caravan pitches located in St Davids, Pembrokeshire. Pitches start from £24 per night for 2 adults. Visit www.pitchup.com for more information on this and thousands of other campsites across the globe.
