His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge officially opened Brains’ brand new state-of-the-art brewery in Cardiff Bay, meeting staff, contractors and family shareholders on Saturday ahead of Wales’ crunch match with Ireland.

The Duke followed in the footsteps of generations of Welsh rugby fans by preparing for the big game with a pint of Wales’ most iconic beer, Brains SA.

Before demonstrating his skills in pulling a pint of Brains, His Royal Highness was given a tour of the company’s new high-tech brewery and shown how Brains’ famous beers are brewed. The Duke also took the opportunity to fill a 9-gallon cask of beer as part of his tour, while meeting Brains’ brewery team and some of the staff who have been installing the equipment at the site over the past few months.

As Wales’ best-known brewer and pub company, Brains has reinforced its commitment to brewing in the nation’s capital by commissioning the Dragon Brewery on a new site at Pacific Road in Cardiff Bay. This multi-million pound investment is a clear sign of the company’s ambition to continue to offer the very best of Wales to beer drinkers and pub-goers across the nation from its base in the heart of Cardiff.

The Dragon Brewery will produce more than 20 million pints of Brains beer a year across a variety of different beer styles, while meeting the very latest environmental standards. The current Cardiff Brewery site next to the station is due to be transformed into the exciting Central Quay development with work commencing later this year.

Brains’ head office and support centre staff relocated to the Dragon Brewery site in June 2018. The brewery operation is currently in pre-production testing before coming fully on-stream by the end of April 2019.

John Rhys, Chairman of Brains and great great-grandson of company founder Samuel Arthur Brain said:

“We were honoured to welcome the Duke to officially open the Dragon Brewery. This marks an important step in our exciting plans to set-up our proud, family-owned Welsh Company to prosper in the long term. We look forward to launching new beers and building on the success of our thriving pub estate in the coming years.

As official ale partners of the Welsh Rugby Union, we are thrilled by the team’s performance and congratulate Warren Gatland and his Wales squad on their amazing achievement of a 4th Grand Slam since 2005. We are delighted to be playing our role in the nation’s celebrations.”
