Research Shows Alarming Lack of Optimism Among Welsh School Leavers

Research by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) has revealed an alarming lack of optimism among today’s school leavers, with almost a third (29%) feeling pessimistic about their career prospects.

The survey of 17-19 year olds found that just half of school leavers (53%) felt confident of landing a role they really want, while others believe difficulty achieving the right qualifications (34%), and difficulty developing the right skills (27%) will prevent them from finding their dream job.

While students opting to go to university are more optimistic about their futures (60%), less than half of those looking at non-university routes (47%) felt positive about their options.

The research also revealed a significant gender split in career optimism, with almost a third of young women surveyed (32%) feeling downbeat about their job prospects compared to just one in five young men (21%).

With GCSE students across the region collecting their exam results last week, CIM is seeking to remind young people, particularly those looking at non university routes, that opportunities in fields such as marketing are now more accessible than ever; with a host of professional qualifications offering clear training paths and progression both via academic and vocational routes.

Dr Gavin Davies, Wales Chair at CIM, said:

“It should come as no surprise that many young people feel pessimistic about the Welsh job market, particularly those looking at non-university routes.

“Continued concern around Brexit, and the first contraction in the UK economy since 2012, will undoubtedly be a cause of concern to both school leavers and their parents.

“But we would like to assure school leavers that there are plenty of options available for young people worried about their future.

“Apprenticeships and qualifications in areas such as marketing, that offer clear training in practical skills sought by employers, will not only boost your CV, but set you up for long term flexibility too.”

CIM offers a professionally recognised range of Marketing and Digital Marketing qualifications, designed to develop the core skills you need to succeed as a professional marketer. To find our more, visit: www.cim.co.uk/qualifications/
