The team at the Newport distribution centre of magazine and newspaper wholesaler, Smiths News, is celebrating after being awarded an industry leading gold standard award for health and safety by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for a third year.

Presented at an awards ceremony held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, the distribution centre retained its Gold RoSPA Health and Safety Award in recognition of its efforts towards improving health and safety standards in the workplace through education and new technologies.

Commenting on the centre’s success, Jonathan Bunting, CEO at Smiths News, said:

“A RoSPA Award is a well-recognised accolade that highlights a company’s efforts towards promoting workplace safety. Health and safety is something we take very seriously and the fact that the Smiths News Newport team has managed to retain the gold award for a third consecutive year is a testament to that.

“A massive congratulations to the whole Newport team for all their efforts and their commitment to such an important part of working life.”

Based on Celtic Way, the Newport Smiths News depot distributes newspapers and magazines to retailers across the region.

Ian Griffin, group magazine operations manager at the Newport distribution centre, added:

“Smiths News Newport is proud to achieve the RoSPA Gold Award for a third successive year. As a team, we’ve worked really hard to ensure that safety is the key component of everything we do as a business and all colleagues are playing an integral role in ensuring they and their teams go home safe each and every day. Special mention must also go to Ashley Smith for her efforts.”
