Owner of Newport Arcade
When my husband and I purchased Newport Arcade in September 2022, we weren’t just buying a building – we were embracing a piece of the city’s history and its future.
Built in the late 1800s, the arcade had always been one of Newport’s gems, but by the time we took ownership, it was a shadow of its former self. With only seven businesses left, it was crying out for renewal.
We set out with a vision to sympathetically restore the arcade and create a space that would celebrate Newport’s vibrancy and individuality. From sourcing authentic Victorian accessories to focusing on creating opportunities for unique, independent businesses, our goal has always been to make the arcade a destination that feels alive and full of character.
Fast forward to 2025, and Newport Arcade has transformed into a thriving hub, housing 43 businesses. Among them is our latest venture, the Craft Emporium – a collective home to 21 small makers and creatives. This project was born out of our passion for nurturing local talent and creating a space where start-ups can afford a city-centre presence. From unique and alternative gifts to jewellery and bespoke crafts, the diversity on offer reflects Newport’s creativity. It’s been heartening to see the shop flourish, with a waiting list of businesses keen to join us.
The businesses in the arcade are as eclectic as the city itself. There’s a taxidermy shop – the only one of its kind in South Wales – alongside a Pokémon store that hosts regular tournaments, an award-winning hair studio, a tattoo parlour, and an independent coffee house and new café and bistro. Each offers something unique, drawing visitors who might initially be passing through but find themselves captivated by the arcade’s charm. It’s a place where people linger, take photos under the glass atrium, and plan their next visit. There’s something truly magical about it.
Beyond the individual businesses, what makes the arcade special is the sense of community it fosters. We’re a little bohemian collective, supporting each other and creating an atmosphere where people feel welcome. This spirit of collaboration is what drives the magic – both for the businesses and for the customers who walk through our doors.
Newport itself plays a big part in this success. The city has always had an independent streak, a grit and character that set it apart. While other city centres may feel increasingly homogenised, Newport retains its soul. It’s not about big chain stores or identikit streetscapes; it’s about intimacy, connection, and the joy of discovering something new.
Independent businesses bring a unique magic to a city, and nowhere is that more evident than in Newport Arcade. We’ve created a space that celebrates creativity and individuality, and in doing so, we’ve brought life back to the heart of the city. For me, there’s no better reward than seeing people enjoy that experience – whether they’re browsing the shops, grabbing a coffee, or simply taking in the atmosphere. It’s a reminder that when you invest in local talent and community spirit, the results can be truly transformative.
