Help Get Gender on the Agenda

Ahead of May’s Senedd election, members of the public are being invited to join Wales’ leading gender equality charity at an online hustings for cross-party candidates.

Chwarae Teg’s ‘Ask the candidate’ will take place from 4.00pm-6.00pm on Wednesday 21 April and provide a chance to ask questions on how political parties will establish a gender equal Wales if elected.

There will be representatives from Welsh Labour, Welsh Conservatives, Plaid Cymru and The Welsh Liberal Democrats, as follows:

  • Sarah Murphy, Welsh Labour candidate for Bridgend
  • Natasha Asghar, Welsh Conservatives candidate for South Wales East
  • Chloe Hutchinson, Welsh Liberal Democrats candidate for South Wales West
  • Heledd Fychan, Plaid Cymru candidate for Pontypridd

Chisomo Phiri, Policy and Communications Partner, Chwarae Teg, said:

“Now is the time for all political parties and those in power to consider a vision of harnessing the full economic potential of women and to build back from the pandemic in a better and fairer way.

“By getting involved, the public will find out how political parties plan to make Wales a fairer place to live, and get some of their direct questions answered.

“Our research shows that a gender equal Wales could add up to £13.6 billion to our economy, and we have set out actions and recommendations in our Manifesto for a Gender Equal Wales, which can create a Wales where all women of all backgrounds and experiences can achieve and prosper. This is particularly relevant and important given how Covid-19 has exacerbated inequalities in our society.”

“We’d really welcome members of the public to registering for the event, along with any questions we could potentially put to the candidates.”
