Development Bank of Wales
The availability of finance and the range of options for businesses to grow in Wales has never been better.
Today, businesses can access funding from traditional banks, alternative lenders, and government sources like the Development Bank of Wales, which offers both debt and equity options. We also have a strong Angel network and act as a fund manager in Wales for the British Business Bank through FW Capital.
The choice and availability of capital for Welsh businesses is robust, creating a dynamic ecosystem for growth.
However, we do acknowledge the existence of market failures, which is why we at the Development Bank of Wales exist – to fill those gaps. Early-stage companies, especially, find it challenging to raise capital. Our tech ventures team addresses this by providing seed and early-stage equity investment, helping companies grow. We work closely with the private sector, often co-investing with other equity investors or debt providers to ensure companies have the capital they need to scale. Our role as a catalyst in this space is vital to helping deals happen and fostering business growth in Wales.
One area in which we see particular challenges is equity funding. Many business owners are hesitant to consider equity investment because they fear losing control or external interference. Our job is to educate and dispel these myths. Equity funding can bring more than just capital – it brings expertise, networks, and the potential for a much stronger business. We’re committed to ensuring businesses understand the value of patient capital and how the right type of investment can transform their operations.
A key strength of the Development Bank of Wales is our personal, hands-on approach. When we invest in a business, we provide them with a dedicated contact who offers ongoing support, from follow-on funding to connecting them with other resources like Business Wales.
Advisors, accountants, and business networks also play a crucial role in guiding businesses toward the right funding options. We encourage entrepreneurs to talk to their peers, other business owners who have successfully navigated the equity investment process. Hearing firsthand from those who have been through the experience can demystify the process and offer valuable insights.
There is already a lot of support available for businesses in Wales, but it can sometimes be overwhelming to navigate. Organisations like Business Wales help signpost companies to the right resources, and initiatives like the Accelerated Growth Programme provide business coaching to help companies refine their business plans and explore funding options.
The Welsh finance ecosystem is continually improving, with more companies coming forward for equity funding than ever before. Our pipeline is the strongest it’s ever been, and as we accumulate more success stories, we hope to inspire even more businesses to take advantage of the opportunities available.
