In the ever-shifting world of cybersecurity, clarity is power. At Cyber Wales, we describe ourselves as the heart and the voice of the cyber community in Wales, not as a slogan, but as a serious responsibility.
Let me explain why that voice matters more than ever.
Cyber means different things to different people. To a government agency, it may mean monitoring national threats. To a university lecturer, it could be about the digital forensics or the computer sciences curriculum. For a small business owner? It’s usually as simple, and as critical, as “how do I keep my customer data safe?”
That variety is healthy, but it creates risk. In a space where definitions and needs differ so wildly, there is no shortage of people offering advice. Some of it’s excellent. Much of it, unfortunately, is not. And bad cyber advice can be more dangerous than no advice at all.
When people know they haven’t been given any guidance, they typically act cautiously. But when someone receives what they believe to be trustworthy advice, yet it turns out to be flawed, they continue under a dangerous illusion of safety. False confidence is often where the real damage begins.
At Cyber Wales, we aim to change that. We work hard to ensure that the information we pass on is not just credible, but independently verified and in line with national cyber strategy.
That’s why we consistently refer to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) as a source of truth. It's not perfect, no single source is, but the UK is the second-ranked nation in the world for cyber resilience, and the NCSC is at the heart of that capability. When they speak, we listen and we encourage everyone in our network to do the same.
Cyber Wales exists to connect, educate, and strengthen the cyber community in Wales and beyond. Our audience is broad: it includes cyber professionals, practitioners, lecturers, researchers, and students. But equally, we speak to everyone in business or public service who uses a computer, manages a network, or connects to the internet—because ultimately, cyber is everyone’s concern.
We’ve seen world-class capability growing right here in Wales. Take Admiral Insurance: not only are they one of the country’s biggest companies, but their red team, tasked with simulating cyber threats to identify vulnerabilities, is regarded as one of the most advanced in Europe. They prove that you don’t have to be a tech firm to be a cyber leader. That lesson applies across every sector.
Cyber Wales is here to act as a platform. A platform for best practice, for shared intelligence, and critically for trusted guidance. We don’t sell anything. We don’t push an agenda. We are a Community Interest Company (CIC), and every cluster, event, collaboration and update we provide is designed to support the people and organisations working tirelessly to secure Wales’ digital future.
We believe in collaboration over confusion. In knowledge-sharing over noise. And in elevating the quiet professionals doing vital work in classrooms, boardrooms, and security operations centres across the country.
