Cwmbran Drive Repairs Get Underway

Work to upgrade a section of Cwmbran Drive is taking place as part of Torfaen Council's roads improvement programme.

Pre-patching work will take place between Sainsbury's and Cwmbran Stadium, and the stadium and Llantarnam Park, on Sunday May 17 to repair the road surface ahead of surface dressing in June.

Road closures will be in place during the works, but the road will reopen as soon as the work is completed.

It comes after 23 roads were micro-asphalted last month, as part of the five-year Better Roads investment programme. Micro-asphalting is a preventative measure used to extend the life of roads showing early signs of deterioration.

Surface dressing is a cost-effective, sustainable, and fast-acting preventative maintenance technique that extends road life by 10–15 years, seals surfaces against water damage, and improves skid resistance. It restores surface texture, enhances safety, and significantly reduces long-term repair costs compared to full reconstruction.

Another phase of road resurfacing and large scale repairs will start in the summer, focusing on roads in a worse condition. Roads were identified through officer inspections and data led road surveys.

The £6.4 million Better Road programme was launched in August 2025, and last year, 38 roads were resurfaced alongside the council's annual maintenance schedule.

The work is being funded by £4 million in capital investment and £2.44 million from the Welsh Government.

In March, an additional £100,000 was invested for large scale repairs on Varteg Road and Coed-y-Cric Road, in Griffithstown.
