Colwyn Bay’s new waterfront has been shortlisted for a global award, and people are being urged to vote for the project to put Colwyn Bay on the map.

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) People’s Choice Award 2019 celebrates the world’s best civil engineering projects that have made a positive impact on their local area and communities. The ICE have dubbed this ‘The award for the ultimate civil engineering project in the world – voted for by the general public’. The project is the only one in Wales, up against nine other projects from all over the world, including some massive multi-billion pound schemes.

The Waterfront Project provides improved protection from flooding as well as improving the promenade. The project involved building a new sea wall, raising the level of the promenade, and a wide range of other improvements to aid in the regeneration of the town.

Cllr Councillor Greg Robbins, Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transportation said,

“We’re delighted that the Waterfront Project has been nominated for this award. The project is a key part of the Baylife Regeneration programme in Colwyn Bay. We’d encourage as many people as possible to vote before the deadline of 27 September 2019. You can even use the free wifi on the waterfront to cast your vote!”

Keith Jones, ICE Wales Cymru Director, said:

“Good civil engineering projects greatly benefit people’s everyday lives, shaping the world and safeguarding our future. The Colwyn Bay scheme has provided much needed regeneration and an economic boost to this part of Wales as well as vital coastal protection and deserves to be recognised as one of the best examples of civil engineering in the country. I encourage members of the community, and indeed the rest of the country, to show their appreciation and cast their vote for the project to win.”

Members of the public can vote at www.ice.org.uk/Peopleschoiceaward until 27 September and the winning project will be revealed on 12 November. The public can follow award updates on social media using #ICEpeopleschoice.
