Cardiff has joined a bid by the Football Associations of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035 tournament.

Council Leader, Cllr Huw Thomas, said:

“Cardiff has a strong track-record of successfully hosting major sporting events and that experience, alongside the infrastructure we have here, the passionate fans, and the warm welcome always on offer, makes for something really special.

“Events on this scale deliver serious economic benefits for local businesses and showcase the city to a global audience. The prospect of potentially being a host city in 2035, part of a national celebration that welcomes visitors from all over the world, is really exciting.”

Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events, Cllr Jennifer Burke, added:

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of the biggest single-sport event in UK history – and the most inclusive and inspiring FIFA Women’s World Cup ever.

“The growth in popularity of women’s football in recent years has been heartening – and you can already see it on grassroots pitches across Cardiff week in week out – but women’s football is for everyone, and being a host city in 2035 could be the catalyst that really takes participation to the next level.”

FIFA are expected to make a final decision on the tournament host in April 2026.
