A major new outdoor fitness destination is coming to Cardiff Bay, with work about to begin on what will become the largest outdoor exercise area in a Cardiff park.
The Cardiff Bay Calisthenics Park will see existing exercise facilities on Cardiff Bay Barrage expanded and transformed into a free-to-use health and wellbeing hub.
The contract to build the new facility was recently awarded to Encon Construction and work is due to start in early August 2026.
The new facility will feature a substantial calisthenics area equipped with pull-up bars, resistance equipment, tyre flips, sit-up stations, jumping blocks and lunge steps. Three lanes featuring obstacles will enable a range of cardiovascular agility challenges. Wheelchair-accessible equipment will also be included.
Alongside the calisthenics zone, visitors will be able to use a new sports practice area and half-court football and basketball facility featuring football skills challenges, rebound walls, football tennis and interactive target games.
A 120-metre warm-up running loop, seating areas and a dedicated yoga and stretching area overlooking the water will complete the development.
A central feature wall will provide climbing and grip-strength activities, exercise guidance and shelter from coastal winds, creating a year-round destination for outdoor fitness.
Cardiff Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, Cllr Jennifer Burke, said:
“This exciting new facility will provide free opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get active, improve their health in a stunning waterfront location.
“Whether you're an experienced athlete, trying calisthenics for the first time, meeting friends for a workout or simply looking for a unique place to exercise outdoors, the new exercise park will have something for everyone.
“Projects like this are an important part of our ambition to help people move more, more often, deliver high quality facilities in our green spaces, and make Cardiff an even better place to live, work and visit.”
