Awen, formerly Monmouthshire Housing Association, has welcomed Monmouthshire County Council’s (MCC) Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Housing and Tourism, Cllr Sara Burch, to its new affordable housing development, Kymin Rise in Wyesham, near Monmouth, to mark the start of a project that will deliver 50 new homes for local people.
On Tuesday, October 20th, Cllr Sara Burch, accompanied by Wyesham Ward Member, Cllr Emma Bryn visited the Kymin Rise site to hear the plans for the development, the local housing need it will help to address and the mix and design of the homes.
Construction is now underway at the site, with delivery partner Edenstone Group working alongside Awen to deliver the development. Once complete, the scheme will provide 18 one-bedroom apartments, six two-bedroom apartments, 12 two-bedroom houses, 12 three-bedroom houses and two four-bedroom houses. Set against the backdrop of the Wye Valley, Kymin Rise will provide affordable homes close to local amenities, schools and Monmouth town centre.

By providing a range of property types and sizes, the scheme has been designed to meet a variety of housing needs and help ensure people can find a home that suits their circumstances at different stages of life. All homes will also be low carbon, net zero and designed to achieve an EPC A rating, helping to provide energy-efficient homes for future residents.
To manage and reduce surface run-off from the site, measures have been put in place in line with the Sustainable Drainage Approval Body (SAB) requirements. These measures will be maintained throughout the construction period to prevent soil, debris and other contaminants from entering the existing drainage network and ultimately reaching the river.
In addition to delivering 50 new homes, the development will provide £63,255 in community benefits funding, which will be invested back into the local area. Awen will work with the community to understand local priorities and identify projects and initiatives that will have the greatest impact, helping to ensure the development delivers benefits for both future residents and the wider community.
Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Housing and Tourism, Cllr Sara Burch, said:
“I’m really looking forward to seeing these much-needed homes for social rent completed and welcoming new residents into their homes. It’s particularly encouraging to see how concerns around water management have been addressed, with the scheme designed to help reduce potential flood risk. I’m also delighted that the modern, highly insulated timber frames will be made here in Wales. It’s great to be working with Awen and Edenstone again to deliver more high-quality homes for our communities in Monmouthshire.”
Awen’s CEO, Gwyndaf Tobias, added:
“It was a real pleasure to welcome Cllr Burch and Cllr Bryn to Kymin Rise and share what we’re creating here. These new homes will make a real difference to local people, but our ambition is about more than simply building houses. We want to create a community where people can put down roots, build their future and feel proud to call home. With the Wye Valley on the doorstep, Kymin Rise brings together much-needed affordable homes with a fantastic setting and a real sense of place.”
Chris Edge, Operations Director at Edenstone, said:
“We’re pleased to be working with Awen to deliver these much-needed affordable homes for local people. With a range of house types and a focus on energy efficiency, Kymin Rise will help meet local housing needs and contribute positively to the wider Wyesham community.”
