New Housing Section to Put Wales’ Development and Delivery Challenges in the Spotlight

By Housing · 6 Nov 2026 · 4 min read

How can Wales accelerate the delivery of new homes, improve the quality of existing housing and overcome the financial, planning and construction challenges preventing the sector from meeting the nation’s housing needs?

That is the central question behind a new dedicated Housing section being launched by Business News Wales, designed to provide a platform for the businesses, organisations and professionals responsible for shaping the future of housing in Wales.

The new section will explore the economic, commercial and social challenges facing the sector, while highlighting the opportunities to improve housing delivery, unlock investment, strengthen construction capacity and accelerate the improvement of existing homes.

Rather than focusing exclusively on housing policy and government targets, the platform will examine the practical realities of delivering homes, from securing development finance and navigating the planning system to managing construction costs, developing skills and improving the energy efficiency of Wales’ housing stock.

The ambition is to create a central source of housing news, industry intelligence and expert insight, connecting those working across the sector with the wider business community and policymakers.

Supported by regular industry news, expert interviews, thought leadership and a dedicated editorial board through the INFORM Wales initiative, the section will provide continuing coverage of the issues influencing housing investment and delivery.

It will also showcase the businesses, housing associations, developers, construction companies, technology providers and professional organisations working to address Wales’ housing challenges.

A major focus will be the relationship between housing and the wider Welsh economy.

Housing development supports employment, creates opportunities for local businesses and supply chains, and plays an important role in attracting investment and supporting economic growth.

At the same time, the availability, affordability and quality of housing have wider implications for workforce mobility, recruitment, public health and the long-term sustainability of communities.

The new section will examine these connections, encouraging a broader conversation about the role housing can play in Wales’ economic development.

Particular attention will be given to the barriers facing housing delivery, including planning delays, infrastructure requirements, development viability, funding uncertainty and the capacity of smaller builders and specialist contractors to participate in new projects.

The platform will also explore the growing importance of housing retrofit and decarbonisation, including the investment, technologies, skills and delivery models required to improve the performance of existing properties.

With Wales facing the combined challenge of increasing housing supply and improving the condition of existing homes, Business News Wales wants to encourage greater understanding of how these priorities can be delivered together.

The launch follows the establishment of the Business News Wales Housing Editorial Board through INFORM Wales, a new evidence-led initiative designed to strengthen the relationship between industry experience and government decision-making.

Mark Powney, Managing Director of Business News Wales, said:

“Housing is one of the biggest challenges facing Wales, but I think we need to look beyond the targets and ambitions and ask a much more practical question: what is actually preventing us from delivering the homes we need?

“We have a huge amount of expertise across the housing sector, from developers and housing associations to construction businesses, planners, investors and organisations working to improve existing homes.

“These are the people who understand the commercial pressures, operational challenges and opportunities that exist across the industry, and we want to give them a stronger platform to share that knowledge.

“Our new Housing section will focus on the realities of delivery. We want to understand why projects become delayed, why investment can be difficult to unlock, how smaller businesses can play a greater role and what needs to change to improve the quality and availability of homes across Wales.

“But this is also about recognising housing as an economic opportunity. Building and improving homes creates jobs, supports Welsh supply chains, drives investment and contributes to healthier, more sustainable communities.

“There are businesses across Wales developing new construction methods, energy technologies, financing approaches and innovative solutions that could make a real difference to housing delivery. We want to showcase those organisations and help the wider sector understand the opportunities they are creating.

“The work we have undertaken through our Housing Editorial Board has already demonstrated the value of bringing together different perspectives from across the industry.

“Through INFORM Wales, we are taking that knowledge and developing evidence-led reports that will reach ministers, senior officials and other decision-makers.

“The new Housing section will complement that work by creating a permanent editorial platform where these issues can be explored in greater depth, new ideas can be shared and progress can be examined.

“Ultimately, our ambition is not simply to report on housing developments or policy announcements. We want to help connect the people, businesses and organisations that can contribute to overcoming the challenges facing the sector and improving housing delivery across Wales.”

The Housing section forms part of the wider evolution of Business News Wales, which is developing a network of regional and industry-specific news platforms supported by original journalism, podcasts, industry engagement and evidence-led intelligence.

Housing associations, developers, construction businesses, professional advisers, investors, technology providers and other organisations wishing to share news, contribute expert insight, participate in future discussions or explore opportunities to support the new Housing section are encouraged to contact the Business News Wales team.
