Adult Learning Wales Welcomes Zaina Aljumma as New Vice President

Zaina Aljumma ALW Backdrop

Adult Learning Wales (ALW) has appointed Zaina Aljumma as its new Vice President following her election at the organisation’s annual general meeting.

She succeeds Bernie Davies in the role.

Zaina brings with her a depth of experience in adult education, serving as a Race Equality Charter Officer at The Open University, and a PhD researcher at Swansea University, funded through the Economic and Social Research Council and Welsh Government collaboration. Her research explores Welsh language policies in the context of migration, with a focus on multilingualism, belonging, and anti-racist approaches.

Originally from Syria, Zaina came to the UK seeking sanctuary and has since built a career in adult education, inclusion, and community advocacy. She holds a Master’s degree in SEN/ALN (Dyslexia) from the University of South Wales and brings extensive experience across ESOL, further education, and community settings. She has also previously been a co-chair of NATECLA Cymru, contributing to the development of ESOL provisions across Wales.

Her work bridges research, policy, and practice, including securing Adnodd funding to develop innovative bilingual educational resources for the Curriculum for Wales. She contributes to national priorities such as Cymraeg 2050 and the Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan, and is committed to widening access to inclusive lifelong learning.

Alongside this, Zaina is the creator of The Kind Place, an award-winning podcast sharing the stories of those rebuilding their lives in the UK.

Stephen Nicholls, Chair of Adult Learning Wales, said:

“Zaina’s appointment is a great addition to the team and I look forward to working with her, alongside our President, Nia Parry, to promote Adult Community Learning across Wales.”

Zaina said:

“I’m truly honoured to take on this role at such a pivotal time for adult learning in Wales. My journey across education, research, and community work has shown me how powerful learning can be in shaping confidence, opportunity, and a sense of belonging.

“Adult learning is not just about skills; it’s about empowerment, voice, and creating pathways for people to thrive. I’m especially committed to ensuring that provision reflects the realities of today’s Wales: diverse, multilingual, and rich in lived experience.

“I look forward to working collaboratively through Adult Learning Wales with learners and partners across Wales to strengthen participation and help shape a more inclusive and transformative future for adult learning.”

Kathryn Robson, Chief Executive of Adult Learning Wales, added:

“I’m really pleased to welcome Zaina as our new Vice President. She brings such a strong commitment to learners and communities, shaped by her own experience, and that really matters in the work we do. I’m looking forward to working with her as we continue to open up opportunities across Wales.”
