University Big Pitch Competition Supports Creative Student Start-ups

Swansea University students had opportunity to develop their innovative business ideas through an annual Big Pitch Competition.

Hosted by the university’s Enterprise Team and sponsored by Santander Universities, The Big Pitch offers entrepreneurs business funding, mentorship, access to networks, accelerator programme spaces and more.

The latest competition saw 15 students pitch their businesses, from healthy dog treats and accessories to Swansea-based cleaning services.

This year’s panel of judges included Dr Ben Reynolds, Swansea University Alumnus and founder of The Urban Foundry, Kim Mamhende, Chief of Staff for the Centre for African Entrepreneurship, and Chris James, Student Enterprise’s Entrepreneur in Residence.

The panel awarded:

  • £7,250 to eight businesses
  • Six bootcamp spaces
  • Two students trading opportunities across Swansea
  • Ten mentors from the university’s alumni

Alongside the Enterprise Team, Swansea Employability Academy's (SEA) Career Boost programme granted an additional £12,500 to eleven students.

Career Boost Consultancy Manager, Zdravka Kamenova, said:

“In partnership with the Enterprise team, SEA’s Career Boost programme is proud to empower students from underrepresented backgrounds and those facing socio-economic disadvantages.

“The funding offered reflects our commitment to supporting diverse aspirations and creating inclusive opportunities for career growth and a successful future, allowing students to achieve their specific long-term career aspirations.”

Reflecting on their experience, 76% of Big Pitch participants rated the event ‘excellent’ and all attendees said they would recommend it to a friend.

Big Pitch participant, Geraint Jones, said:

“Swansea University's Big Pitch event was really inspiring, from books to cooks, to ears and trees, it had it all – everyone had such incredible ideas. It's exciting and refreshing to hear some of the innovations that are emerging from undergraduates and postgraduates.

“I am incredibly grateful of the support of the SU Enterprise Team and look forward to sharing my progress with them over the coming years.”
