Civil Engineering in Focus as Annual Photographic Competition Launches in Wales

A popular annual photographic competition is now underway in Wales calling on those who live or visit to capture and celebrate Welsh civil engineering on construction sites or in the built environment of the country.

The competition, organised by ICE Wales Cymru, encourages individuals, friends and family groups to take stock of the landscape around them. The challenge is out to take photographs of intriguing or unique buildings, and bridges or impressive construction sites and projects. Whilst imaginative, creative compositions of places discovered on the photographers travels are also welcome.

This year, in keeping with the Institutes focus on working towards carbon net zero, a new category has been introduced. Budding photographers are being prompted to snap projects or infrastructures that have been restored, reused or recycled in their creation.

Entry is free with top prizes of £100 on offer for the best photos. Full details can be found HERE

Competitors are advised to start planning early to get that winning shot with the whole of the summer in front of them to take part. Deadline Friday 8 September.

Judges have been nominated to browse through entries which last year hit an all-time high.

Among them is head judge, Adam Johnson, principal engineer at Mott MacDonald, who noted the “extremely good” standard and variety of photographs received last year.

“This competition provides a unique window on civil engineering in all its forms in Wales and much is expected from entrants in 2023!” Johnson said.

The annual competition grows each year and has now gained recognition from another leader in the civil engineering industry, Mott MacDonald, who joins Aecom and Arup as sponsors of this exciting event.
