225 Year Old Iron Manager’s 10 Bedroom Mansion for Sale at Auction

The former sprawling, grandiose home of a nineteenth century South Wales iron company manager, later converted to a hotel, is for sale at auction.

Substantial and historic Grade II listed Rhymney House Hotel has existed as a number of entities in its 225 years since being built.

The commanding property, at Rhymney Bridge, Rhymney, Llechryd, near Tredegar, is now listed for sale online with Paul Fosh Auctions at £215,000.

Welsh monuments and historic buildings group Cadw records Rhymney House as being built in 1801 as the Rhymney Iron Company manager's residence on land leased from the Duke of Beaufort.

It was for many years the home of the Maddox family. Later it was at various times the Ffynnon Glas, Cristals, the Three Counties Club and latterly the Rhymney House Hotel.

Despite substantial exterior and interior alterations, the building was Grade II listed for its key position on the site of the earliest ironworks in Rhymney and its important connections with the Rhymney Iron Company.

James Hollingsworth, of Paul Fosh Auctions, said:

“The property, dating from circa 1801 and currently operating as the Rhymney House Hotel, is conveniently situated close to the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road, providing good transport connections towards Merthyr Tydfil, Abergavenny and the wider South Wales region.

“The hotel currently provides extensive accommodation including 9/10 en-suite bedrooms, dining room, lounge, main bar, snug/second bar, commercial kitchen, function room and substantial rotunda conservatory.

“Externally, the property benefits from extensive parking, gardens, lawned areas and outdoor seating, providing considerable outside space.

“Rhymney House Hotel offers an attractive opportunity to continue its existing hospitality use or explore its residential development potential. Subject to the necessary planning enquiries, consents and applications, there may be potential to convert the property back into a substantial residential dwelling or potentially create a scheme of self-contained apartments/flats.”

The next Paul Fosh Auctions sale, when this and some 100 other varied lots will be on offer, starts at 12 noon on Tuesday, September 1 and ends from 12pm on Thursday, September 3.
