Young Animator Awarded UKSE Bursary to Develop Creative Skills

Budding graphic artist Yunus Rehman has received a £1,500 bursary to help nurture his talents.

The money has come from Tata Steel subsidiary UKSE, enabling Yunus to buy an Ipad and editing software to hone his creative design skills.

Yunus, who is 12 and a pupil at Bishop of Llandaff School in Cardiff, was part of the team which recently created the award-winning film Animated Voices about life in the diverse community of Butetown. The film won Best Animation (12-19) at last year’s Into Film awards, and Yunus and the others attended a ceremony in London’s Leicester Square where actor Hugh Grant presented their prize.

Animated Voices was created in collaboration from Welsh animation firm Gritty Realism, based at UKSE’s Cardiff Bay Business Centre.

Gerald Conn, who runs Gritty Realism, said:

“Creating the film was an enriching experience for Yunus and the rest of the team, and I was delighted to see their hard work rewarded with the award they received.”

Yunus’ mother, Saida Rehman added:

“Yunus is very good at design and seems to have found a niche in animation. We are very grateful to Gerald for his support, and also to UKSE for their bursary which is proving invaluable in helping Yunus develop his skills.”

The UKSE bursary is part of the organisation’s 50th anniversary celebrations. They are being awarded to young people with abilities to help them develop and achieve their aspirations. In the last half century UKSE has supported businesses in Wales and the UK with targeted funding and high quality accommodation, and is estimated to have helped create and sustain 83,000 jobs in that time.

Andrea Rogerson-Hewett, UKSE Senior Workspace Co-ordinator, said:

“Our bursaries are aimed at helping talented young people in Wales and around the UK make the most of their abilities, and we are very pleased to be providing Yunus with this equipment.”
