Anglesey County Council, working in partnership with Natural Resources Wales and the Glasffordd Môn Steering Group, is pleased to confirm the next stage in delivering a new traffic-free green corridor in southern Anglesey.
The route will link The Cob at Malltraeth with Newborough, creating a safe and accessible connection for pedestrians and cyclists.
This project is part of the Council’s wider ambition to enhance the Lôn Las Cefni route and supports the Glasffordd Môn vision – a green corridor across Ynys Môn that benefits local communities, landscapes, and ecosystems.
Funded through the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Fund and managed by Transport for Wales, the new route has been designed to comply with the standards of the Wales Active Travel Act, reflecting national priorities to improve walking and cycling infrastructure across Wales.
The Glasffordd Môn vision attracted strong public support during consultation in 2022. A further consultation on this scheme, held in April 2024, confirmed endorsement from residents and stakeholders, particularly for safer and more accessible active travel links.
Anglesey’s Head of Service Highways Waste and Property, Huw Percy said:
“This project is about addressing the current connection between the communities of Malltraeth and Niwbwrch. By creating a dedicated active travel route, we are providing residents with a safe, sustainable and accessible way to walk and cycle between the villages.”
He added:
“This not only supports everyday journeys, but also strengthens social cohesion and promotes healthier, more sustainable travel choices.”
Project aims:
- Reconnect Malltraeth and Newborough by providing a safe active travel route
- Improve access for residents to key destinations, including the village centre and Ysgol Santes Dwynwen
- Strengthen links to Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest
- Deliver biodiversity gains through ecological mitigation and habitat enhancement
Construction works:
- Construction will begin on 1 September 2025 and continue into early 2026.
- The principal contractor for this phase will be Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK.
Works will include:
- Establishing a 1.25km shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists, separated from vehicle traffic, from Pen Cob Car Park to the edge of Niwbwrch
- Introducing traffic calming measures and a raised table within Niwbwrch village to improve safety
- Installing four build-outs along The Cob to create safer viewing areas and reduce potential conflicts between users
Given the route’s location within sensitive areas, including Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), the Council has committed to delivering strong environmental protections. These include:
- Habitat restoration at Pwll Traeth Bach to support a wide range of species
- Ongoing ecological monitoring and collaboration with specialists to ensure long-term biodiversity gain
Dylan Williams, NRW’s Operations Manager for North West Wales, said:
“We are pleased to support the Council in this project as part of our community partnership working at Newborough. Extending the Lôn Las Cefni route, will improve connectivity to key services and destinations and deliver health and wellbeing benefits for both residents and visitors.”
He added:
“The scheme has been designed to enhance the surrounding environment through habitat restoration and biodiversity improvements, ensuring the route helps people and nature thrive. This integrated approach will strengthen community access while promoting long-term ecological resilience.”
