Resurfacing work will be starting this month on the first set of roads under Newport City Council’s major road maintenance programme.
The £6.6 million programme, announced in June, is focusing on 55 of the city’s most critical and high-priority roads.
The programme consists of two elements, both of which will run at the same time as each other. The first element will include high-priority roads which need full resurfacing work. The second element will include high-priority roads which require surface treatments rather than full resurfacing to preserve the highway asset.
More work is planned between now and next summer.
Full resurfacing work will be taking place at Stow Hill and Clifton Road. This work will be along all of Clifton Road, and along Stow Hill between its two junctions with Clifton Road, as well as the junction of Stow Hill and Friars Crescent.
This work will take place between Monday 18 and Thursday 28 August. Work will take place between 8pm and 5am on weekdays between these two dates.
A full road closure will be in place here while work is being carried out, with emergency service access maintained at all times.
Residents are asked to avoid parking their vehicles along Stow Hill and Clifton Road or its verges, as well as any side junctions, while the work is going on. All vehicles left on or at the side of the road are done so at the owner’s risk.
Surface treatment work will be happening at:
Cardiff Road B4237, between the Belle Vue interchange and the junction of Cardiff Road and Cae Brynton Road.
Cardiff Road A48, in two locations, between:
- the entrance to Spring Court and the Coach and Horses pub
- the junction with Pound Hill to the entrance of Spring Court
Chepstow Road A48, in four locations, between:
- the junction with Langstone Park to the junction with Old Langstone Court Road
- the junction with Hendrew Lane to the junction with Greenmeadow Lane
- the junction with Bowdens Lane to the junction with Pen-y-Worlod Road
- the junction with Pen-y-Worlod Road to the junction with Old Turnpike Road
The council has recently finished carrying out pre-patching works in these areas ahead of this surface treatment work.
For all of the work listed above, work will start on Tuesday 12 August, and is due to last around one week. Work will be carried out during the day, as it cannot be carried out overnight.
The roads will remain open while work is carried out, with lane closures and temporary traffic lights in place. Resident and emergency service access will be maintained at all times.
Weekend work will be carried out in some areas in order to improve efficiency and get work finished quicker, minimising disruption to residents.
All work schedules are weather dependent and subject to change. Noise and disruption will be expected, though not all activities will be equally disruptive, the council said.
The council said it would provide further updates on the next round of roadworks soon.
