Newport City Council is introducing a 7.5 tonne weight restriction for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) on the George Street Bridge.
Surveys of the bridge have revealed some evidence of degradation of concrete, the council said. It said it needed to reduce the load on the bridge in order to keep it open for most traffic.
HGVs will be restricted from using the bridge while further investigations are carried out. A diversion route for HGVs is in place via Usk Way, the A48 SDR, and Corporation Road.
The council said it was satisfied that the bridge is safe to use for traffic under the 7.5 tonne weight.
