Residents of Torfaen took advantage of a free drop in session on Thursday 17th May to find out how they can transform their ideas into a business.  Held at Pontypool Indoor Market, Pontypool and hosted by the Torfaen Economy & Enterprise team within Torfaen County Borough Council, the event attracted a number of people keen to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams – from manufacturing male grooming products to creating upcycled furniture.

In addition to Torfaen Economy & Enterprise staff, Business Wales and Princes Trust were on hand to provide advice and support.

In order to help with the all important financial aspects of setting up a business, attendees also had the opportunity to find out more about the Torfaen Business Start-Up Loan. Torfaen Economy & Enterprise are working with Gateway Credit Union to offer up to £1,500 over two years for new businesses and those trading for less than a year.

Gaynor Wakeling, Business Support Manager for Torfaen Economy & Enterprise said

“The turn out this afternoon has been fantastic and we’ve been delighted to help so many people in taking the next steps in starting a business in Torfaen.  The Business Start-Up Loan is a great example of how a local authority can work with a financial organisation like Gateway Credit Union to deliver something meaningful for the business community. The loan can help in a variety of ways – from purchasing product to helping with marketing and it’s very straightforward to apply for. We’re looking forward to following up the enquiries and supporting residents in the area with their next steps.”

Councillor Alan Jones, Executive Member for Business, Culture, Leisure and Tourism at Torfaen County Borough Council said

“It’s great to hear that this event  has helped  local people in starting a  business and  that they are benefitting from the business support Torfaen Economy & Enterprise can offer. I wish all the attendees  great success in their new ventures.”
