Starting on 20th August, A former Welsh rugby international is to lead a team who will kayak along the Welsh coastline, climb the country's highest mountain and cycle 150 miles in an extraordinary 12-day endurance challenge to raise £50,000 for two charities supporting people affected by motor neurone disease (MND) and prostate cancer.
Paul Thorburn, famed for his record-breaking 64.2 metre penalty against Scotland in 1986, a Welsh international record that still stands today, leads a team of nine on the Paddle, Peak and Pedal challenge, sponsored by insurance experts Everywhen and other generous sponsors. Beginning at Mumbles Yacht Club, Swansea at 10.30am on 20 August 2026, the challenge will see the team kayak to the Isle of Anglesey before climbing Snowdon and completing a gruelling 150-mile cycle back to Swansea, crossing the finish line on 31 August.
The ambitious challenge aims to raise £50,000 for the MND Association and Prostate Cymru, supporting vital research, care and services for people living with two diseases that have touched the lives of the team taking part.

Bringing together former rugby players, a teacher, a serving police officer, a retired Metropolitan police officer, a former civil servant and one participant currently recovering from prostate cancer, the team is united by a shared determination to make a meaningful difference for MND and prostate cancer sufferers and their families. Alongside Paul Thorburn, the team comprises Bryan Herd, Ian Bain, Mark Cook, Ian Daniels, Iwan Hughes, Andy Mort, Simon Webborn and David Wintle.
devastating impact of these diseases
Paul Thorburn, challenge leader, said:
“My challenge colleagues and I have all witnessed the devastating impact that these diseases have on individuals, their close families and friends. We are delighted that Everywhen is sponsoring us as we aim to support the ongoing research into finding cures.
“As well as the financial donation, the input from Everywhen has proven invaluable, ensuring that we have considered all the risks and made appropriate plans to deal with the daily activities and any unexpected situations which can sometimes arise with challenges of this magnitude.”
With local offices in Cardiff and Swansea, Everywhen was delighted to be able to support the communities that it serves, and to play a small part in helping Paul and his team achieve their fundraising ambitions, alongside a number of other generous sponsors.
Justin Newton, Regional Managing Director at Everywhen, said:
“The scale of this challenge cannot be underestimated. To paddle, climb and pedal their way through such a demanding programme is an incredible undertaking, and one that reflects the passion and dedication Paul and the team have for the causes they are supporting.
“Everyone at Everywhen is proud to stand behind them as they raise awareness and vital funds for charities doing such important work. We wish every member of the team the very best as they embark on this remarkable challenge.”
