A new set of computer-generated images shows how Swansea's transformed Castle Square Gardens will look when work is complete.
Produced for Swansea Council by scheme architects ACME, the updated images provide the latest visual representation of the approved scheme. The square is due to reopen in the second half of next year.
Council leader Rob Stewart said:
“The images offer an exciting glimpse of what people can look forward to. They showcase a greener, more welcoming city centre destination.
“They show two striking new café-friendly buildings – a copper pavilion and a stone pavilion – alongside a large outdoor screen for events.
“There's a playful water feature designed to encourage people to spend time in the square.
“It's fantastic to see progress being made on site and to be able to share updated visuals that bring the vision to life.”
Work on the transformation is progressing well, with significant activity having taken place since the main contractor, Knights Brown, began construction this year.
Excavation work, foundation construction and other key stages are now underway as the site moves steadily towards completion.
The transformation will create a greener, more attractive and more welcoming city centre space for residents, businesses and visitors, while providing new opportunities for events, socialising and relaxation in the heart of Swansea, the council said.
The project is part of the council's ongoing £1 billion city regeneration programme. It aims to create a city centre focal point that combines high-quality public space, greenery, improved accessibility and facilities for events and entertainment.
ACME founding director Friedrich Ludewig said:
“We're thrilled that the vision for a greener square in the heart of Swansea is starting to take shape.
“Historically, the site was famous as the location of the Ben Evans Store. After the war, it became an open space, initially known as Castle Gardens.
“The works now in progress will increase tree coverage, bring more green planting and more room to relax and enjoy performances.
“A new water feature will occupy the centre of the space inviting play and interaction, set into colourful paving inspired by paintings by Dylan Thomas's artist friends.
“Two pavilions will be built into the landscape, with references to Swansea's copper smelting history.”
