The National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB) has appointed industry leader Paul Walker as its new Chair to succeed Sam Laidlaw.
Paul brings extensive experience from a career at the forefront of data, technology and innovation-led growth. Paul forged his business career at Sage, the online accountancy company, where he served as CEO for 16 years and was part of the original founding team. Since, he has served on a number of FTSE Company Boards and is the current Chair of the FTSE top 10 company RELX, as well as Chair of US listed Ashtead. His work across a number of sectors demonstrates how long-term investment in innovation, skills and evidence-based decision-making can transform productivity and performance. Paul has also brought this perspective to higher education through his role as Chair of the Council at Newcastle University, where he has championed the strategic role of universities in driving innovation, skills and regional growth, and in forging stronger, more productive partnerships between academia, industry and place.
Paul said:
“I am excited to be joining NCUB at a moment when the UK has both significant ambition and an urgent need for delivery across its innovation system. NCUB plays a critical role in bringing universities, business and policymakers together with clarity, confidence and shared purpose. I would like to thank Sam for his outstanding leadership in strengthening NCUB’s impact and influence. Building on those foundations, my focus will be on ensuring that the UK’s most important strategic assets, its exceptional research capability and talent, translates into long-term economic and societal impact. Not through slogans or short-term initiatives, but through commitment, partnership and results.”
Sam Laidlaw, outgoing Chair of NCUB, said:
“It has been a privilege to serve as Chair of NCUB during such an important period for the UK’s innovation system. NCUB plays a vital role in connecting universities and business through evidence, trust and long-term collaboration. Paul brings exceptional insight, authority and strategic focus, and I am confident that under his leadership, and with the ongoing commitment of members and stakeholders, NCUB will build strongly on its mission and play an even more influential role in shaping the UK’s future prosperity.”
Dr Joe Marshall, Chief Executive Officer of NCUB, said:
“Sam has been an exceptional Chair for NCUB who has helped the organisation grow in reach and impact. With a new Chair comes great opportunities – Paul understands the UK’s innovation system in the round. As a founder, he knows what it takes to turn ideas into world-class companies; as a senior business leader, how to scale innovation and productivity; and as a university Chair, how research, skills and place underpin long-term growth. That rare combination of experience positions him exceptionally well to lead NCUB at a moment when the UK must align ambition, investment and delivery across the whole system. I am delighted to welcome him as our new Chair.”
