Small and medium-sized businesses in Wales can develop their understanding of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and learn how to use it effectively in the workplace through a free, practical workshop in Newport.
The Introduction to Gen AI & Prompt Engineering workshop will take place on Friday 6 November 2026, from 10am to 1pm at Alacrity House, Kingsway, Newport.
Delivered as part of the fully funded AI Awareness and Adoption Programme, the session will introduce participants to generative AI, how large language models work and how businesses can use effective prompting techniques to support everyday tasks.
The workshop will combine practical demonstrations, live exercises and business-focused scenarios to help attendees understand how to give AI clearer instructions and assess the quality of its responses.
The session will cover:
- An introduction to generative AI, its capabilities and limitations
- Prompt engineering fundamentals, including setting goals, providing context and defining output requirements
- Practical exercises comparing basic and structured prompts
- Techniques for improving AI-generated responses and developing reusable prompts
- Applying AI to business activities such as research, marketing, customer communications and planning
- Responsible AI use, including fact-checking, protecting confidential information and recognising potential bias
Participants will also have opportunities to explore how AI could improve existing business processes, identify suitable tasks for automation or assistance, and understand where human judgement and oversight remain essential.
The session will conclude with a practical exercise, allowing attendees to refine a prompt they can use in their own work and identify an AI application to test within their business.
No previous technical knowledge or experience of AI is required.
The workshop is free to attend and exclusively available to Welsh-based small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with attendance limited to two delegates per business.
The event will be held at Alacrity House, Kingsway, Newport, NP20 1HG.
Further information and registration details are available through the event organiser.
