Welsh Government is proud to be the lead delivery partner of 5G Wales Unlocked – bringing together an impressive consortium of partners including BT, Cisco, UtterBerry, AppWay, Cardiff University, Jam Creative, Monmouthshire CC and Blaenau Gwent CBC to deliver 5G mobile connectivity to parts of rural Wales and the valleys.

We are excited to be working closely with the communities across Monmouthshire and Blaenau Gwent supported by the Welsh Government's flagship Tech Valleys Programme and DCMS Rural Connected Communities Testbed and Trials programme to demonstrate the opportunities that 5G can realise in rural and valley communities.

We are looking forward to seeing how 5G will enhance the business, farming and local communities across Monmouthshire and Blaenau Gwent – sharing the history of Raglan Castle through Augmented Reality, and exploring how CADW can benefit from 5G sensors monitoring their buildings. Working with farmers in Monmouthshire to discover how 5G can improve their security and wellbeing; whilst ensuring the community of Ebbw Vale benefit from the roll out of 5G across the town providing 5G enabled multi-modal transport solutions. Additionally, children and businesses across Blaenau Gwent and Monmouthshire will be able to have immediate access to the latest technologies and new experiences through a 5G enabled 360 degree interactive immersive classroom and supporting technology across a network of schools.

Rollout of new mobile technology normally starts in cities but we want to show the value that can come from connecting rural and valley communities, helping these areas to unlock their full potential.  This is not a short-term endeavour.  We’re committed to helping to transform businesses, stimulate new jobs and improve public services.  And for that to be viable in the long run we need to be able to demonstrate the commercial opportunity for long-term, sustained investment.  That is what lies at the heart of our commitment to 5G Wales Unlocked, a passion and focus to help build a digital Wales.
