Housing Cabinet Member Visits New 42-Home Affordable Housing Development in Newport

By Built Environment · 23 Oct 2026 · 2 min read

Awen, formerly Monmouthshire Housing Association, has welcomed Newport City Council representatives to its first affordable housing development site in Newport, with construction planned in 2027 for 42 new homes.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, Councillor Saaed Adan, accompanied by Stow Hill ward member, Councillor Kate Thomas, visited the site to hear how the scheme will provide high-quality, energy-efficient affordable homes for local people.

The visit included a tour of the site by Awen’s CEO, Gwyndaf Tobias and Development Director at Awen, Chris Kinsey, an update on construction progress and an overview of how the development will support the growing demand for affordable housing across Newport.

Over the coming months, work will continue on site in preparation for construction of the development, which is due to begin in spring 2027. Once complete, the development will provide 42 affordable homes, including 21 two-bedroom houses, five three-bedroom houses and 16 one-bedroom apartments.

Built to high insulation standards and fully electrified, the homes have been designed to improve energy efficiency, helping to reduce energy use and lower running costs for residents. The development is being delivered with funding support from Newport City Council and the Welsh Government.

Development Director, Chris Kinsey, said:

“It’s great to welcome Cllr Adan and Cllr Thomas to see the progress being made on site. This development will deliver high quality, energy-efficient homes that will genuinely make a real difference for local people, and we’re looking forward to progressing with the project.”

Awen’s CEO, Gwyndaf Tobias, added:

“This is an exciting milestone for Awen, and we are pleased to be working closely with Newport City Council on our first development in the city. Expanding our geographical reach has enabled us to help increase the supply of quality affordable housing in South Wales, helping meet local housing needs for years to come.”

Councillor Adan said:

“This looks set to be a great new development for the city, offering high-quality and affordable homes to local families and individuals to help meet a growing demand. I would like to welcome Awen Homes to Newport and look forward to seeing this new partnership develop for the benefit of our residents.
