Homeless families, a craft club and wildlife projects were among the projects in the Prestatyn area to share funding from Castle Green Homes.

Projects with an emphasis on sustainability, the environment, health and wellbeing were invited to apply to Mission Green Prestatyn, a voluntary scheme offered by Castle Green Homes linked to its Sŵn y Môr development.

Originally, there was £5,000 to share, but that budget was increased due to the volume of worthy applications received.

Sales director Sian Pitt said:

“The concept of Mission Green is simple – we want to celebrate and support those people and organisations in and around Prestatyn who are working hard to look after the environment or residents’ wellbeing. We had a great response and received applications from a range of worthy causes. We found deciding who to allocate the funding so difficult that we added an extra 50% to the pot. This has enabled us to support 11 projects for maximum impact on the wider community in the area surrounding our Sŵn y Môr development.

“With the grant funding we’re supporting school holiday activities via Helping Homeless North Wales, Denbighshire Play Ranger Service and Fins Swim School. We’re also helping the environment with donations to Ysgol Clawdd Offa, Little Explorers and Friends, Hedgehog Help Prestatyn, Big Pool Wood volunteers, the Friends of Coronation Gardens and Ysgol Gronant. We’ve also donated to Cosy Craft Club to help combat loneliness while learning a new skill which will also help keep people warm in winter.”

The Mission Green funding was allocated as follows:

  • Cosy Craft Club for yarn and other materials, plus venue hire
  • Fins Swim School for swim safe sessions
  • Denbighshire Play Ranger Service for open access play sessions
  • Helping Homeless North Wales to provide activities for homeless families
  • Ysgol Clawdd Offa for forest school enhancements
  • Little Explorers and Friends for home-growing kits
  • Prestatyn in Bloom for self-watering hanging baskets
  • Hedgehog Help Prestatyn for hedgehog houses
  • Big Pool Wood Volunteers for a new drill
  • Friends of Coronation Gardens for plants
  • Ysgol Gronant for their wildlife garden
  • Helping Homeless North Wales received £400.

Fundraiser Richard Kendrick said:

“We work with homeless officers and other charities to support families going through homelessness who are living in hotels or B&Bs in Prestatyn, Rhyl and Rhuddlan. There can be three to seven people sharing one room and one TV, with no Wi-Fi. Something as simple as cinema tickets, popcorn and a drink can be out of their budget for these families. Thanks to Castle Green we’ve been able to treat families to a trip to the cinema, giving them something to look forward to and something they can talk to their friends about.”

The Mission Green funding is in addition to the community investment Castle Green will make under a Section 106 agreement signed during the planning process.
