A Cardiff hotel opened its doors to more than 100 pupils from six local secondary schools, giving them a hands-on introduction to the world of hospitality, leisure and tourism.
Students from Fitzalan School, Ysgol Bro Morgannwg, Lliswerry High School, Cathays High School, Afon Taf High School and Ysgol Bro Pedr took part in a series of interactive workshops led by hotel department heads at voco St. David’s Cardiff. The workshops were designed to showcase the wide range of skills, creativity and teamwork involved in running a five-star hotel.
The day formed part of the Springboard Takeover programme, an initiative by the UK charity Springboard, which helps young people explore career opportunities in hospitality, leisure and tourism through inspirational, real-world experiences. The aim is to spark curiosity, build confidence, and equip students with insights and skills that could lead to future training, apprenticeships or employment in the sector.
During the day, students took part in six hands-on workshops across the hotel. From perfecting towel artistry with the Housekeeping team to designing their own chocolate masterpieces in the Chocolate Workshop, every session offered a chance to get creative and learn something new. Over in Food & Beverage, students discovered the art of mixology during a Mocktail Making and Tray Skills challenge, complete with a friendly obstacle course that tested their service skills.
Meanwhile, the Spa team demonstrated hand massage techniques, showcasing the care and precision that go into creating relaxing guest experiences. In the Sales and Marketing workshop, teams developed their own campaigns to promote the hotel, discovering how creativity and storytelling drive guest engagement. Finally, the IHG Discovery Careers & Guidance session gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the many roles that keep a hotel running – from front-of-house and culinary to management, marketing and spa therapy.
Tirion Canavan, Operations Manager at voco St. David’s Cardiff, said:
“We’re so proud to host this event again this year and to see the enthusiasm from every student who took part. Hospitality is all about people, creativity and teamwork — and it’s fantastic to see young people discovering how rewarding a career in this industry can be. The energy and curiosity they brought to each session was truly inspiring.”
Students enjoyed a specially prepared lunch showcasing the flavours of the hotel’s Tir a Môr restaurant before an end-of-day celebration where standout participants from each workshop were recognised with certificates and small prizes.
Rebecca Slade, Programme Delivery Manager, from Springboard added:
“Our mission is to help young people experience the incredible opportunities that exist within hospitality, leisure and tourism. Takeover Days like this one are an invaluable way for students to see how their skills and passions can translate into fulfilling careers. We’re delighted to work with voco St. David’s Cardiff once again to bring this to life.”
