The commercial vehicle sector is not standing still — and neither are we. At David Spear Commercials, we are continuously analysing market movements and adapting in real time to ensure we remain aligned with the needs of our customers.

This is a market where conditions can shift quickly. The ability to interpret data, anticipate change and respond decisively is what separates those who react from those who lead.

Global pressures continue to shape the trading environment. Ongoing instability in the Middle East is influencing fuel markets, supply chains and overall business confidence — all of which feed directly into the cost base and decision-making of UK fleets and SMEs.

Against this backdrop, visibility is critical. We are closely monitoring fuel price trends, demand signals and buying patterns to ensure we stay ahead of market sentiment and can guide our customers with clarity and confidence.

The latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) points to a subdued start to 2026 for the UK new light commercial vehicle market.

March registrations declined by 3.4% to 49,505 units — the weakest March performance since 2023 and a notable concern given the importance of the new plate month in setting the tone for the year ahead.

The underlying picture is mixed. Growth in large and medium vans demonstrates that core demand remains, but this was more than offset by a sharp decline in pickup registrations, highlighting the fragility of certain segments and the impact of shifting buyer priorities.

The headline decline is being driven in large part by the collapse in pickup demand, down 54%. That’s not a coincidence — it’s a direct consequence of last April’s tax changes, which reclassified double cab pickups as cars for Benefit in Kind and capital allowance purposes.

For sectors like construction and agriculture, where pickups are essential working vehicles, that policy shift has had a chilling effect. Businesses are simply holding back.

More significantly, the transition to electric vans continues to underperform against expectations. BEV registrations fell by 15.9% in March to 3,543 units, representing just 7.1% of market share. While year-to-date uptake has edged forward, BEVs account for only 9.0% of the market — well short of the 24% target set for 2026.

As SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes noted, this performance is “deeply concerning.” The data reinforces the growing gap between policy ambition and market reality, and the need for a more aligned, commercially viable pathway to adoption.

In contrast, the used van market continues to show resilience. Demand for quality, low- to mid-mileage vehicles remains robust, driven by businesses seeking value and certainty in an uncertain environment. However, supply dynamics are tightening. Extended fleet replacement cycles are reducing the flow of well-maintained stock into the market, increasing competition for the best vehicles. This imbalance between supply and demand is likely to remain a defining feature in the months ahead.

Our Approach

  • Our strategy is built around clarity, discipline and responsiveness.
  • Maintaining strong availability across new and used stock
  • Applying daily, data-led pricing and market benchmarking
  • Interpreting market signals to guide customer decisions
  • Delivering consistent value, reliability and service

Markets like this reward decisiveness. Businesses that understand the data, stay close to their customers and adapt quickly will continue to find opportunity — even in more challenging conditions.
