The Institution of Civil Engineering (ICE) Awards are held regionally across the globe and highly respected by the industry showcasing the outstanding work done by civil engineers over the previous year. The shortlist for the ICE Wales Cymru Project Awards 2023 has just been announced and includes the Dwyran Natural Flood Management Pilot Scheme, Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Isle of Anglesey.
Due to Climate Change and during heavy rainfall events a Natural Flood Management (NFM) pilot scheme study was undertaken. This revealed that the capacity of the open channel networks, fed by natural two springs and rainfall, were exceeded causing water to collect on the surface and posing a risk to several properties in the area.
During work on the NFM scheme the open channel network area was drained to an existing pond and then was partially culverted under the A4080 highway. The scheme now consists of an earth bund forming a flood storage area and a series of ponds and connecting channels to intercept floodwater. This has restored the area to wetland and will improve local biodiversity.
The project was submitted by principal contractor, Alun Griffiths and involved principal designers Waterco and client Isle of Anglesey County Council. The pilot was funded by Welsh Government.
Keith Jones, director, ICE Wales Cymru said:
“It is encouraging to see a solution found through civil engineering solutions which protects local residents and benefits the local area providing a restored habitat for all to enjoy”..
