Data Protection Wales Conference

By AI, Tech & Innovation · 29 Oct 2026 · 2 min read

Changes to data protection legislation and the growing use of artificial intelligence will be examined at a Cardiff conference bringing together regulators, data specialists and professionals from across Wales.

Organised by Policy Insight Wales, the inaugural Data Protection Wales Conference will take place on Tuesday 23 March 2027, from 9.30am to 3pm at Cardiff Marriott Hotel.

The event will explore the implications of the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, alongside forthcoming guidance from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) on artificial intelligence and automated decision-making (ADM).

Discussions will focus on how organisations can prepare for evolving regulatory requirements, strengthen transparency and accountability, and manage the practical challenges of protecting personal information as AI becomes more widely adopted.

Key topics will include:

  • Getting ahead of the ICO’s new ADM guidance and know what to change before the Code lands
  • Build AI impact assessments that stand up to scrutiny
  • Write privacy notices that work in both English and Welsh
  • Share data across partners under WASPI without putting public trust at risk
  • Clear the DSAR and FOI backlog including responding to AI generated requests
  • Use ADM in recruitment fairly, with a human in the loop
  • Protect children’s data without slowing down services
  • Ensuring transparency and accountability for agentic AI
  • Leave with practical next steps and a network of Welsh peers to lean on

The conference will also consider the EU AI Act’s transparency obligations, the Smart Data 2035 Strategy and the challenges of managing subject access requests, Freedom of Information requests and complaints involving sensitive or commercially confidential information.

Particular attention will be given to the Welsh context, including bilingual service requirements, information sharing between organisations and the importance of maintaining public trust.

The event will provide opportunities for professionals from the public and private sectors to share experiences, discuss approaches to compliance and consider practical steps for managing data protection responsibilities.

Materials can also be provided in Welsh by contacting the organisers.
