Fake apps are malicious applications designed to deceive users by impersonating legitimate apps.
According to Marc Rocker, Head of Cyber at Towergate Insurance (soon to be Everywhen), these apps exploit the user’s trust and desire for convenience, tricking them into downloading dangerous malware onto their devices.
Rocker says:
“Fake apps can appear anywhere, including in trusted app stores like Google Play and the Apple App Store. Installing them on a personal device can lead to important private data being stolen and users being tricked into making in-app purchases and taking out subscriptions.
“It isn’t always easy to spot the fakes but, whenever possible, it’s best to download apps directly from the official website of the brand or developer. App stores are generally safe but fake apps can and do slip through. Business owners should only allow pre-approved apps to be downloaded on to work devices used by their employees.
“Other precautions include checking on who the developer is i.e. Is it the brand’s official company name? Does it have typos or small variations that indicate it is not genuine? Read the app description carefully. Poor spelling, grammar, and disjointed descriptions are red flags, as is the quality of the imagery. Low quality images undermine the credibility of the app.”
Mark Rocker’s other top tips include:
If you spot a well-known app such as TikTok and it only has a fraction of the downloads you would expect, then be suspicious. If an app has very few reviews or suspicious reviews, then it may be an indication that it is fake. Look for detailed and balanced feedback. Protect your device when using it online, by downloading an antivirus cybersecurity tool which can help to detect malicious apps.
If you are unlucky enough to download a fake app, Mark has the following suggestions on how to deal with it:
Step 1 – Immediately uninstall the app, if you notice anything suspicious on your device.
Step 2 – Change your password(s) straightaway.
Step 3 – Run a full security scan using a trusted antivirus or a mobile security app.
Step 4 – Perform a factory reset if your device continues to behave abnormally.
Step 5 – Report the fake app to the app store or website from where you downloaded it.
“Above all, after discovering a fake app on your device, take prompt, decisive action as this can help to limit the potential damage which can be considerable.”
